The Cirque de Navacelles has been designed by the Vis river between the Hérault département and the Gard département. This natural site has been created approximately 3 million years ago.

Pratiqué à l’origine par les esclaves, le moring a failli disparaître durant la départementalisation. Aujourd’hui, quinze ans après que Jean-René Dreinaza ait impulsé sa renaissance, cet art de combat réunionnais connaît un succès considérable.

Des champs de cannes à sucre aux salles d’entraînement avec tatamis et miroirs, plus d’un siècle s’est écoulé avant que le moring ne soit codifié et connaisse cet incroyable essor. Loin des clichés folkloriques, l’art martial d’origine afro-malgache est désormais reconnu comme sport à part entière. Sur l’île, 18 écoles ont ouvert leurs portes, fréquentées par près de 800 pratiquants dont le tiers est licencié au sein du comité réunionnais de moring. “Au début, nous souhaitions juste faire revivre cette pratique. Puis, nous avons eu la satisfaction de la voir reconnaître par le ministère de la Jeunesse et des Sports. Aujourd’hui, grâce à l’enthousiasme que les Réunionnais ont pour ce sport, nous voulons qu’il dépasse nos frontières et rayonne sur tout l’océan Indien”, explique l’ancien champion d’Europe de boxe française et expert international en moring. Depuis deux ans, Maurice et Rodrigues sont les premières îles de la zone à avoir été touchées par le phénomène. Elles recensent déjà une bonne centaine de jeunes adeptes. L’hexagone n’est pas épargné : douze clubs sont affiliés à la fédération française de moring pour environ 400 pratiquants. Au total, plus d’un millier de personnes, essentiellement des jeunes âgés entre 6 et 25 ans, pratiquent cet art martial réunionnais.

L’école de la vie

Des chiffres assez prometteurs pour une discipline qui, sous sa forme actuelle, ne compte officiellement “que” quinze ans d’existence. Même s’il est encore loin de rivaliser avec le karaté qui, sur l’île, atteint la barre des 4 300 adeptes grâce à la centaine de clubs en activité, il fait bonne figure dans la liste des sports de combats en devançant notamment la boxe anglaise et ses 11 clubs pour 400 licenciés. Président de la commission formation au sein du comité de moring, David Testan pense que certains facteurs clés sont à l’origine de cet engouement :”C’est un sport gratuit, hormis le coût de la licence. De plus, il allie danse, musique, gymnastique, techniques de combat. On ne retrouve pas cela ailleurs”. À la Réunion, c’est l’Est qui totalise le plus grand nombre de pratiquants : à raison de deux, voir trois entraînements par semaine, presque 200 marmailles se retrouvent au sein des écoles de Sainte-Suzanne, de Saint-André et de Saint-Benoit. Autrefois réservée au “petit peuple”, coupeurs de canne et affranchis, la danse guerrière est devenue l’une des activités préférées de la nouvelle génération. Chaque mois, des rencontres organisées aux quatre coins de l’île permettent aux jeunes d’acquérir un peu plus d’expérience et au public d’admirer leurs performances. “Il y a une hygiène de vie à respecter pour être un bon compétiteur et cela empêche de tomber dans certaines dérives. Le moring a aidé beaucoup de jeunes à sortir de la galère. Certains ont trouvé du travail par ce biais”, souligne Jean-René Dreinaza. Au-delà de l’aspect culturel, spectaculaire, sportif qu’il représente, le moring c’est aussi une école de la vie

Congratulations to Alexandre Mitellus winner of the XPS M1330 for his entry in our recent Dell Go Green Competition.  The judging panel selected the idea of a car pool scheme for employees as the most deserving idea based on the level of interest and potential positive impact the initiative would have on the environment.  Alexandre was the lucky winner out of a number of employees who submitted this idea.

The high level of entries and ideas received from the Dell Go Green Competition demonstrates the commitment by Dell employees to improving their environment.

A number of common themes were clearly reflected from the ideas submitted by employees. These included:

• Installing energy efficient lighting with motion sensors to switch off lights automatically
• Switching to electronic media for items such as payroll, nuacht, invoices and packing slips. 
• Other ideas included product design

The following employees were also recognized by the panel for the quality (and quantity) of their entry in the competition.

Limerick – Tom O’Sullivan, Fintan Hynes, Richard Alllen, Tom O’Keeffe, Liam Gough
